MATT VAN AUKEN
What's your superpower/what do you want it to be?
According to Jamie, my superpower should be to manipulate the fabric of space-time and mold reality to my (read: her) liking. Haven't figured that one out yet. I'd say my actual superpower is the ferocity and dedication with which I stay on point with my life's work. Deliberately vague/open-ended answer. Ha!
How do you express gratitude?
Ritual, occupation, and - perhaps most importantly - self-care. Opportunities to express gratitude abound in life, and that absolutely includes the way we treat and tend to ourselves, perhaps first and foremost.
Why do you share yoga?
Why doesn't everyone?
What's your favorite pose? Why?
I feel like no matter how I answer this question, I'm going to be cheating on hundreds of poses. And I'd rather not be getting mad texts from a bunch of jealous yoga poses indicting me for liking them less than others. Pass!
When was the last time you laughed out loud?
Today. SO many times.
What always makes you smile?
My little parrot buddy, Cassady.
What does flow mean to you?
The ability to adapt and transition with the current of experience, versus, you know, not being able to do that.
What can our TGY friends expect from your class?
Yogic scripture, nerdism, intelligent movement, challenge, discernful presence (of self! I hope!), laughter, and above all else, breathfulness.
In life, my biggest passion is healing. I pursue the art thereof as a family doctor (presently in residency), as a practitioner of classical Ayurveda/lifestyle wellness and Thai massage (check out thebuddhasmedicine.com for more!). I am also a devoted yoga vedanta sadhaka, studying Self through meditation and Sanskrit. My beloved Guru, Manorama, is my biggest shout-out here (www.sanskritstudies.org), though there are many wonderful teachers in my life worth highlighting. You'll have to ask me about them if you want to know more, though!
